Mental Health and Justice
Q: Have you ever wondered why approximately 20 per cent of Canada’s prison population was receiving psychiatric care when they were charged with an offence?
Staff who work in Fred Victor’s Mental Health and Justice Program understand the relationship between homelessness, mental health and behavior leading to jail time.
They work with individuals who are trying to stay out of jail but struggle with anger, chronic stress and mental health. When staff help keep their clients out of jail by maintaining humane, effective relationships with them, social services are used rather than costly time in an institution. 132 people benefited from Fred Victor’s Mental Health and Justice program last year.
The program is part of a broader network of Mental Health and Justice Programs across Toronto.
